Every year as the Fourth of July holiday approaches, Connecticut residents hear, see and read warnings about the need to drive safely over the holiday. It is a sad fact that during this time each year, there may be an increased risk of being in an accident in part because of the volume of traffic on the roads.
Sadly, early reports indicate that the 2016 Fourth of July holiday weekend was more dangerous than the 2015 Fourth of July holiday period. Each year, there is a certain window of time designated to the holiday period. The exact number of days or hours can shift based upon what days of the week are involved. This year, accidents attributed to the holiday weekend would be anything that occurred from Friday, July 1 through Monday, July 4.
With almost 13 hours left in the total holiday period, the number of motor vehicle accidents and drunk driving arrests in 2016 outnumbered those in 2015. This year in Connecticut, 36 drivers were arrested for impaired operation and 275 accidents were reported. Those 275 accidents caused 36 injuries. Two lives were lost, both along Interstate 95. One fatal crash happened on Saturday and the other happened on Sunday. It is not known what factors were involved in the fatal accidents.
