Connecticut residents know that there are risks inherent on the roads every day. Whether as a pedestrian, bicyclists, motorcyclist or occupant in a vehicle, the chance of being in an auto accident exists. When an accident is caused by the negligence of a drunk driver, the emotional impact can add to the challenges experienced by victims and loved ones.

Such is the situation for the family members, colleagues and friends of a 32-year old paramedic who was killed in an accident caused by a drunk driver. The incident occurred last year and the drunk driver has since pleaded guilty to criminal charges in the case. After her guilty pleas to second degree assault with a motor vehicle and second degree manslaughter, the woman has been sentenced to spend four years in jail. Upon her release, she will experience a probationary period lasting five years.

Reports indicate that the at-fault driver’s blood alcohol content was up to two times the 0.08 percent legal limit at the time of the accident. The deceased paramedic had apparently only recently finished of all of his emergency responder training. It is not known if high speed or other issues were also involved in the crash.

When unnecessary accidents like this occur, it can be difficult to know what to do. Victims or loved ones should always remember that they have rights and are due compensation for medical expenses, loss of companionship and more. Contacting a lawyer in these situations can be one way of getting the right help during a difficult time.
