Boat driver charged with boating drunk after fatal boat accident

As the temperatures rise across Connecticut, and the rest of the U.S., many people hit the lakes, rivers and oceans to enjoy some time on the water, and many consume alcoholic beverages while they do so. Just as driving a car while drunk can be hazardous to drivers and their passengers, so too can operating a boat while intoxicated. Impairments caused by alcohol consumption can easily cause boating accidents, which, like other motor vehicle collisions, can result in catastrophic injury and even death.

One person was reportedly killed recently in a boat accident that was allegedly caused by a drunken boater. The fatal boat accident occurred on a lake in South Carolina. According to reports, the boat hit a buoy, causing the deceased and two other passengers to be thrown into the lake. It remains unknown to the public whether the person who was killed died as the result of an injury that he or she sustained when the passengers were tossed from the boat, or if he or she drowned.

The driver of the boat was reportedly arrested and charged with boating under the influence, a felony charge. It was not reported if a blood-alcohol test was administered, nor was it indicated whether or not the boat’s passengers had also consumed alcohol.

If you have suffered the loss of a loved one in an accident that resulted from someone else’s negligence, you could be entitled to punitive and compensatory damages. Working with an attorney is one way to learn about your options and rights.
