Drunk driving continues to be a problem in New Haven, and throughout the U.S. As was discussed in last week’s post, getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol can be highly dangerous. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 10,000 people were killed in alcohol-involved collisions in 2012 alone, and many more were injured. It is not just drunk drivers who are at risk of being injured or killed in drunk driving accidents, but also other motorists, passengers and bystanders.
Authorities in Willimantic reportedly believe that alcohol may have played a role in a car accident that left two people injured recently. While attempting to make a left-hand turn, it was reported that the alleged drunk driver struck another vehicle, causing it to spin up onto the sidewalk. According to reports, a female passenger in the second passenger was injured. A man who had been standing on the sidewalk was also injured after being struck by the second vehicle. They were both taken to the hospital, but there have been no further details reported regarding either victim’s injuries or their updated conditions.
It remains unknown to the public at this time whether the purported drunk driver submitted to a Breathalyzer, or other sobriety tests. However, she has reportedly been charged with assault with a motor vehicle and with driving under the influence.
