Woman charged with manslaughter after drugged driving death

Connecticut residents are all-too aware of the dangers that that drunk drivers pose to innocent victims on area roads. However, alcohol is not the only drug that can be a problem when it comes to impaired driving. Many people make the choice to drive vehicles after using legal or illegal drugs as well. The outcomes of these decisions can be just as deadly as those involving alcohol and driving.

An example of this can be seen in an accident in which a 69-year-old woman was killed in May of this year by a drugged driver. A BMW driven by a 23-year-old woman crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a passenger sedan. The victim was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. A report indicates that an investigation has revealed that the at-fault driver was both drugged and distracted. Cell phone records show she hung up from a handheld phone call immediately prior to the early afternoon accident.

Police requested both blood and urine samples from the woman which returned evidence of morphine and cocaine in her system at the time of the crash. She had apparently been in treatment for opioid addiction but was kicked out of the program due to lack of participation. She has now been charged with manslaughter in the second degree , driving under the influence of drugs and illegal use of a cell phone while driving.

People who become victims of accidents caused by negligent drivers deserve compensation for their injuries and losses. Talking with an attorney may be a good way to learn how to obtain appropriate help.
