Understanding driver fatigue

Connecticut drivers may think they are being responsible as long as they are not drinking and driving. However, it can sometimes be just as dangerous to be drowsy behind the wheel. It is important to understand how fatigue affects people and what can be done about it.

Drivers may be drowsy for a variety of reasons. DrowsyDriving.org says that fatigue can stem from lack of sleep, sleep disorders and erratic work schedules. People who are not well-rested generally experience delayed reactions and lapsed judgment behind the wheel. This can result in accidents which can be fatal.

It is important to know how to avoid drowsy driving. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, one simple thing drivers can do is take naps. This can be more beneficial than a cup of coffee. Before getting back on the road, it is usually a good idea to wait about 15 minutes so drivers are completely awake. Additionally, quick fixes such as caffeine or rolling down a window should not be depended upon for increased awareness. This is because these measures usually do not keep people alert for long and can sometimes make them feel more awake than they really are.

Additionally, it is recommended that drivers always get enough sleep. This is because the body’s circadian rhythm determines how awake a person feels, and people may sometimes be less alert if they have not had enough sleep. Drivers are also more likely to be drowsy before 6 a.m. and between 2 and 4 p.m. and may want to avoid driving during these times.
