Tips to avoid becoming a fall statistic this winter

When winter sets in and snow and ice become a daily reality for Connecticut residents, you probably fall into one of two categories – you either love the winter wonderland, or you are annoyed by the inconvenience of dealing with the wet, slippery cold. Whether you enjoy or cannot stand winter, you are as likely as anyone this season to slip and fall in the ice or snow. At Loughlin FitzGerald, P.C., we want to help you avoid an injury that could land you in the emergency room.

Slip-and-fall claims are among those most commonly reported at work, according to EHS Today. You do not only face a slip-and-fall risk on the job, but anywhere there are wet or icy conditions. Common places to slip and be injured are grocery stores, sidewalks, parking lots and building entryways.

How do you avoid a fall during slippery conditions? First, learn to recognize the signs. If the pavement is wet, it may not just be water. Oil or black ice could make the surface dangerously slippery. Do not assume property owners have salted the walkways or mopped up puddles to safeguard against falls. It is a good idea to wear sturdy shoes or boots with non-slip soles this winter, and walk slowly and carefully in uncertain conditions. Take particular care when exiting and entering your vehicle. Entryways and lobbies are prime spots for water, mud, and slush to gather, so you need to walk on mats and carpets whenever they are present.

It is a property owner’s responsibility to keep walking areas as safe and slip-free as possible. Learn more about hazardous winter conditions by visiting our page on slip-and-fall risks.
