New Year’s Day drunk driving accidents

While drunk drivers may be encountered in Connecticut every day, the chances of being in a drunk driving accident usually increase over a holiday. While many drivers are careful on New Year’s Eve, they may want to use extra caution the next day.

Drinking and driving is responsible for about half of the fatal accidents that occur on New Year’s Day. According to the New York Times, federal government statistics show that the day poses a larger risk than both St. Patrick’s Day and the Fourth of July. Memorial Day is one of the only holidays which witnesses more drunk driving fatalities. Additionally, pedestrians are affected by drinking and driving. About 22 pedestrians are killed by drunk drivers on New Year’s Day. This number is the highest for drinking and driving pedestrian fatalities.

One reason that New Year’s Day may have more of this kind of accident is that many people believe myths about alcohol. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says that despite what some people think, they are not safe to drive if they have had a cup of coffee or are speaking clearly. Alcohol can still affect drivers’ coordination even if they are not tired, and drivers tend to lose their coordination before they feel drunk.

It is suggested that drivers plan ahead so that they do not drive while intoxicated. Having a designated driver is a good idea, as well as making sure that nonalcoholic drinks are consumed. Drivers may also want to make sure they are not out too late, as alcohol may make them feel more tired than they are.
