Winter is moving further in the past as spring makes its way to Connecticut. The reduction in ice or other conditions on area roads along with the growing number of daylight hours may help to improve safety for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians alike. That, however, does not mean that the risk of being involved in a motor vehicle accident is completely eliminated. Sadly, that is a risk that is always present.
The family of a motorcyclist has tragically been reminded of this recently. On a Friday afternoon in Watertown, the motorcyclist was involved in a fatal accident with a tractor-trailer. The truck driver was reportedly not injured in the wreck but the motorcycle rider died after being taken to Waterbury Hospital. Details of his injuries and whether or not he was wearing a helmet were not released. The man was 40 years old.
Reports indicate that neither driver is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. The influence of speed as a factor in the accident has also been ruled out. An investigation into the deadly crash has been launched. Both the Central Naugatuck Regional Accident Investigation Team and the Watertown Police Department are involved. No details have been provided on the potential for a civil lawsuit to be filed by any surviving family members of the motorcyclist.
