How to be a safe pedestrian

When people walk along New Haven roads, they usually do not expect to get hit by a car. Collisions involving pedestrians are more common than Connecticut residents may realize, and it is important for people to know how they can be responsible pedestrians.

Many people may not realize that where they walk plays a role in keeping them safe. The American Automobile Association says that it is best for pedestrians to walk on sidewalks. People should typically not walk along streets where pedestrians are not allowed, such as highways. Some streets may not have sidewalks and when this is the case, people should usually face traffic and stay on the far side of the road. When people need to cross the street, they should make sure they use a crosswalk. Some roads might not have a crosswalk, so people should generally cross at a spot with plenty of light.

Pedestrians can also keep themselves safe by making sure they are visible to drivers. People should usually wear bright clothing when they walk during the day. At night, it is generally best to wear clothes with reflective strips. Additionally, people should try to anticipate the actions a driver might take and obey traffic signs.

It is important to teach children how to be responsible pedestrians. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, parents should teach their children to use crosswalks and stay on sidewalks. They should also help their children understand that because headphones and cellphones can distract them, they should not use these devices when they are crossing the street. Additionally, parents should make sure young children know they should never run into the street and also know to look both ways before they cross the street.
