Conn. driver extricated from vehicle after bus collision

Emergency personnel summoned to the scene of a collision between a vehicle and a near-empty school bus early Thursday afternoon in Stamford, Connecticut, had to use the "Jaws of Life" to extricate the driver from her car. The crash sent three people to the hospital and temporarily closed down the road where it took place.

At the time of the collision, the school bus only carried two people, the driver and a teenaged student. Each sustained minor injuries in the crash and traveled to the hospital for treatment in the care of emergency responders. The 82-year-old woman driving the car that struck the school bus sustained serious injuries. Emergency personnel required a complex extrication to remove her from the vehicle, which included removing the car's roof as well as its doors, cutting the brake pedal and lifting the front dashboard, as well as use of the "Jaws of Life," the colloquial name for hydraulic rescue tools sometimes deployed after car accidents.

Following the extrication, authorities transported the driver to the hospital. Details are not available as to the nature of her injuries, only that authorities describe them as serious. There is also no further information available as to the condition of the two occupants of the school bus. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Motor vehicle accidents spare some and harm others, and there is no predicting what the most severe effects will be. It may be helpful for those injured in a collision to contact an attorney.
