4-year-old dies after being attacked by pit bull

Many pet owners in New Haven, CT are not aware that they can be held legally responsible for the actions of their pet. This is why it is so important to make sure the animal is properly restrained and monitored, especially around children.

One woman is learning this lesson the hard way. A 4-year-old child who was in her care was bitten several times by an American Staffordshire terrier, also known as a pit bull. The dog bite wounds were so severe that the girl had to be taken to the hospital via helicopter. She died just one day later.

The 24-year-old woman was babysitting the girl when the dog attacked her. Pit bulls are notorious for their jaw strength and tendency to not let go once they do bite.  Their bites have been known to cause severe damage and death.

Because the child was in the woman’s care when the attack happened, the woman was arrested and taken to jail. She has been charged with child endangerment resulting in death.

The little girl’s family has no doubt been traumatized by her tragic death. One of the worst parts is knowing that it could have been prevented had the dog been properly restrained. The family can seek solace in the fact that the person who failed them after they entrusted her with their daughter’s care will now have to answer to criminal charges.

The family may also wish to speak with an attorney about filing a civil lawsuit in order to recoup damages associated with the girl’s medical costs, funeral expenses and pain and suffering.
