You might think that one of the most embarrassing things which can happen at work is falling down in front of your coworkers. In some situations, however, slips can be dangerous. Although they may seem common enough, these incidents account for 25 percent of the injuries which are reported each year.

At your workplace, you may encounter a variety of hazards which can cause you to fall. The says that these include open drawers, wet floors, uneven surfaces and clutter. Many of these hazards can easily be prevented, however. One thing you can do is ensure that all of the floors in your building, as well as the pavement outside, are in good condition. You can do this by making sure any spills are promptly cleaned up and by setting up “wet floor” signs after mopping. Outside, it is a good idea to shovel snow and rake leaves before they accumulate.

Wearing the right shoes is another step you can take to ensure you stay on your feet. Make sure your shoelaces are always tied and that the soles of your shoes are not too slick. Additionally, you should strive to keep hallways and offices clear of obstacles such as briefcases and cords. In some situations, it may help to assign coworkers specific tasks so everyone helps keep the premises free of tripping hazards.

Good lighting can also prevent falls. It is a good idea to turn the lights on as soon as you enter a room and to fix light switches which are not working. Additionally, ramps and stairs should typically have plenty of lighting. While you remove tripping hazards from your workplace, you should not forget about your own behavior. Paying attention to your environment and slowing down can help you identify hazards before you encounter them.
