Every year in the state of Connecticut and all across the country, people of all ages are seriously and even fatally wounded by traumatic brain injuries. Accident incidents can result in immediate and life-altering brain trauma, and often have profound consequences for entire families. Identifying TBI symptoms early is a crucial part of providing timely and effective treatment. Provided here is a brief overview of some of the signs and symptoms commonly associated with brain injury incidents.

The Mayo Clinic discusses traumatic brain injuries, and explains that a number of factors can play a role in the nature and severity of symptoms that an accident victim experiences. For instance, some symptoms present themselves almost immediately following an injury, while others may not become apparent for an extended amount of time. The type of brain trauma that a person sustains can also have an effect on the symptoms he or she shows. Some of the symptoms associated with mild to moderate TBI’s include but are not limited to:

  •          Loss of consciousness
  •          Mild to severe vomiting and/or nausea
  •          Loss of concentration or significant confusion
  •          Depression, anxiety or other behavioral changes

The age of the accident victim can also play a role in the kind of symptoms that he or she experiences. According to UpToDate, TBI symptoms can be especially difficult to identify in young children because they are often unable to articulate how they feel. Consequently, it may be necessary to watch a child in order to note changes in their physical and/or mental demeanor. Following an accident, a child victim should be monitored by a medical professional for everything from sleepiness to unusual clumsiness to irritability, among other symptoms.
