People in New Haven, and elsewhere, are likely aware that even a minor bump on the head could lead to long-lasting issues. Blows, bumps or jolts to the head can all result in a person suffering a traumatic brain injury. These injuries have a broad range of effects, spanning from limited, minor headaches that subside soon after the accident, all the way to brain damage, which can result in permanent disability.

According to reports, the mother of a 15-year-old girl has filed a lawsuit against her daughter’s school and an event company after the girl suffered brain damage during a “Spirit Day” event at the school. The teen was participating in a mock sumo-wrestling match, in which students put on inflatable sumo suits and attempted to knock one another out of a ring. In the lawsuit, the girl’s mother reportedly argues that the company that provided the suits and operated the event and the school’s failure to have appropriately trained employees running and overseeing the event led to the injury. She also claims that the girl did not have on a protective helmet during her match, and her not being fit into the suit correctly, also contributed to her daughter’s brain injury.

During the event, it was reported that the teen’s head came into contact with the floor multiple times. As a result of the accident, the girl has lost the ability to communicate properly. Her behavior, according to her mother, is now child-like and not at all like the blossoming young lady that she had been prior to the accident.

People, who have been involved in a situation such as this, may find it helpful to discuss their situation with an attorney. A lawyer can help them to understand their rights and what they may be entitled to.
