With the severe winter storms we have had lately here in Connecticut, the potential for accidents involving cars has increased. Driving in the snow and ice is a whole different ballgame, and unfortunately, there are drivers out there who do not realize this. When the road is wet or snow-packed, it can be slippery and hard to stop. Drivers should be extra careful and slow down.

One fatal accident that occurred as a result of the snow left a mother and father dead and their daughter injured. A 31-year-old man driving an SUV crashed into the Connecticut family as they walked single-file near the side of the road in Milford. A blizzard had made walking on the sidewalks impossible; snow plows had evidently piled them neck-high with snow from the roads.

Since a majority of the side streets were left uncleared, many people could not get their cars out of their own driveways. This seems to be the case for the family that was walking that day. Eyewitnesses report that the family of four was walking in the same direction as traffic when they were hit. One daughter was unhurt in the incident.

Authorities are still investigating the accident, but it appears that visibility was not an issue. The highway where the accident occurred did not have any twists or bends, so the driver should have been able to see the pedestrians. He has not been charged yet, but eyewitness reports made it sound as if the SUV was driving too fast for the conditions.

The 53-year-old father and 51-year-old mother were taken to the hospital in critical condition before they both eventually succumbed to their injuries. The need to slow down in hazardous winter weather conditions cannot be stressed enough.
